So we figured out our mate (and this time, it was one mate per group who came together so they wouldn't freak out our foreign belief in germs, so Lindsay and I shared one), refilling frequently from the thermos of hot water on the table. As I said, mate is a bitter drink, especially for the first few pours. So, Argentinians will often drink mate with a sweet snack. And the most quintessentially sweet snack in Argentina is the alfajor (plural alfajores). As we began drinking the mate, waiters brought out platters with light vanilla cookies, dulce de leche, coconut, and melted chocolate. The basic alfajor is dulce de leche between two small, fluffy vanilla cookies (think vanilla wafers but more airy). But there are many other types of alfajores, and tonight we made ours with coconut around the edge of the dulce de leche and dipped in dark chocolate. They were fantastic and a perfect sweet balance to the bitter mate.
After rolling ourselves out of the restaurant, Lindsay and I hurried home, showered and had some friends over for drinks before going to Terrazas, one of the best clubs in Buenos Aires. It really was great: three dance floors (one with electronic music, one with pop music and one with regatón) and a large outdoor patio right on the water in Puerto Madero.
